Bosch's innovative mining solutions
of today and the future

The mining sector in
Latin America

Global demand makes mining a strategic segment for several countries. Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Peru, for example, are major mineral producers, concentrating 85% of exports from all over Latin America and the Caribbean. Since 1970, mineral extraction grew over 600%, getting to 3.97 billion tons in 2017. The investiment in the segment is also large: 171 billion dollars were invested between 2003 and 2017, despite a small drop over in the last five years.

This recent drop, however, does not nullify the importance of the sector for the economy of the region. In Chile, for instance, the investment forecast for the next 10 years is up to 60 billion dollars. The country was responsible for 23% of exportations in all of Latin America and the Caribbean between 2015 and 2017. The biggest export is copper, since Chile has 21% of all the world’s reserves of the mineral.

In Brazil, according to Brazilian Mining Institute (Ibram), the mineral industry has over 10,000 companies employing over 2 million workers and are international examples of competitiveness and business quality.

The sector corresponds to 16.8% of the country’s Industrial GDP, with a production volume of over 2 billion tons per year. In 2017, it generated US$ 28.3 billion in exports and over 400 million tons were shipped from Brazilian ports.

However, the sector’s success faces challenges related to safety, energy efficiency, increase in productivity, operational costs reduction, and, naturally, environmental preservation.

To address these issues, technology is essential. And in the context of the 4th Industrial Revolution, Mining 4.0 is gaining more and more space.

With its DNA of innovation, Bosch, a world leader in solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT), is already a part of this new reality. We offer innovative, quality solutions to make Brazilian mines more and more connected and efficient.

Bosch will be at EXPOSIBRAM (Brazil), one of the largest fairs in the industry, from 9 to 12 September 2019.
